First Caribbean Feminist Encounter

Feminists from around the Caribbean will meet in Trinidad and Tobago this weekend at the preparatory meeting for the 8th Latin American and Caribbean Feminist Encounter, to be held in the Dominican Republic next November. The Hon. Dr. Daphne Phillips, Minister of Culture and Gender Affairs will open the meeting, which will be held at the Conference Room, ACS Secretariat, 11-12 Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain, from December 12-13. Starting time is 9:00 a.m.

Among the meeting’s objectives are to:

  • Analyze the status of the feminist movement in the region within the context of the cultural, economic, political and social realities of participating countries
  • Foster links among Caribbean feminists and deepen their involvement in the organization of the 8th Feminist Encounter
  • Appoint an Ad-Hoc Caribbean Committee to the Organizing Committee for the 8th Encounter.

The Organizing Committee for the 8th Encounter is hosting the meeting in an effort to get Caribbean feminists involved in this important event, which is expected to attract over 1,000 participants. Next year’s encounter will also be the first held in the Caribbean. Previous encounters were held in Colombia (1981), Peru (1983), Brazil (1985), Mexico (1987), Argentina (1990), El Salvador (1993) and Chile (1996).

Forty participants from the Dutch, English, French and Spanish-speaking Caribbean are expected to attend.

The CAFRA Secretariat is coordinating the logistics for the Trinidad and Tobago meeting.
