Gender Planning for Participatory and Collaborative Natural Resource Management

Friday 12 November 1999

The Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action (CAFRA) in conjunction with the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) will hold a 4-day regional workshop on Integrating Gender Issues in Participatory and Collaborative Natural Resource Management from 15-18 November 1999 at the Kapok Hotel in Port of Spain. Dr. Carol James, Senior Advisor of the United Nations Development Programme, will give the keynote address.

Eighteen resource management professionals from government and non-governmental agencies in six Caribbean countries, including Cuba, Dominica, and Trinidad are expected to take part in the workshop.

This course is designed to introduce natural resource managers to tools and methods for gender analysis and planning so that they can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of collaborative and participatory resource management interventions.

According to CANARI’s Executive Director, Yves Renard, "It is important for us as resource managers to understand the differences in the ways women and men use natural resources and have access to alternatives as well as recognise the various social, cultural and economic factors that affect the ability of women and men to participate in resource management initiatives."

The Caribbean Association for Feminist Research and Action is a regional network of feminists, individual researchers, activists and women’s organisations. Its mission is to celebrate and channel the collective power of women for individual and societal transformation in order to create a climate in which social justice is realised. CAFRA’s activities include programmes and projects on the following: Women in Caribbean Agriculture; Women’s Human Rights, including Reproductive Rights; Women, Development and Sustainable Livelihoods; Gender and Trade; Women’s History and Creative Expression; and Women and Politics.

The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute is a regional non-governmental organization concerned with conservation, environment, and sustainable development in the insular Caribbean. CANARI works to create avenues for equitable participation and effective collaboration of Caribbean communities and institutions in managing the use of natural resources critical to development. With offices in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia and St. Croix, US Virgin Islands, the institute has specific interest and extensive background in the identification and promotion of participatory and collaborative forms of natural resource management.
