STRENGTHENING OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANISATIONS

In 1998, Women’s NGOs identified capacity building as an area of need. Since February 1999, CAFRA was part of a process with OXFAM and the British Development Division for a Capacity Building Project for Civil Society Organisations. As a result of this process, CAFRA received resources for the following activities to be completed over a four-year period:

Training in Governance, Social Marketing and Advocacy, for replication among members

Production of a Manual for Board Members

Production of a Leadership Training Manual

Translation of a Website into English, French, Spanish and Dutch

All CAFRA National Committees have been involved in and benefited from these activities.

The process of replicating the workshops on Social Marketing, Governance and Advocacy began and several countries have completed the workshops utilising funds provided by HIVOS. The main tool for these workshops is a training package produced by CAFRA as a first step in the replication process. The following National Committees were engaged in the training:

Twelve English-Speaking One Dutch-Speaking Three Spanish-Speaking

This was possible because the material was available in the language of each member country. A total of 400 persons were reached, including several groups that were not CAFRA members. The country reports will be analysed to arrive at a Vision Statement and Strategy for CAFRA.

ADVOCACY

The same committees as listed above participated in the Advocacy Training. In addition to reaching approximately 200 members, and estimated addition of 150 were reached because National Committees participated in a Regional Advocacy Campaign around the visit of Mr. Michael Moore, the Director of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

An overall Advocacy Strategy will be drawn out of the reports submitted to the Secretariat.
