National Linkages

In addition to activities flowing from the overall programme, the national committees operated in the following areas of focus:

COUNTRY STATUS
Bahamas
- The Domestic Violence Project was successful. Other work on Gay Rights and equality in the constitution is impeded by the heavy influence of the Church.
Barbados
- There is less government support for women’s issues. The concept of male marginalization is taking hold.

- Established links with police through domestic violence project

- Conducted lecture series on Caribbean civilization
Belize
- Domestic Violence Intervention/Prevention Project

- Capacity building training

- Gender (as a subset of parenting)

- Counselling of teenagers on sexual conduct
Dominica
- Capacity building workshop

- Domestic Violence Intervention/Prevention Police training with Social and Health Workers

- Advocacy (on minimum wage) and research

- Small trade research (collaboration with other territories)
Guyana
- Domestic Violence training of Police Officers, Health Workers and Social Workers

- Publication of Reader on History of Women in the Caribbean

- Collaborated with other NGOs on Women and Health

- Trade Workshop held in April 2002
Jamaica
- Parenting skills (to stem tide of crime)
Entrepreneurial skills

- Lobbying on review of gender restrictive passport form

- Amendment of the Domestic Violence Bill

- Collaboration with rural women’s organisations

- Honoured women with disabilities
Netherlands Antilles/Curacao
- The economic crisis and cut in social and health services has led to increased poverty and hence crime. CAFRA has become more visible, and is often consulted.

- The Committee has conducted several courses on various subjects including trade and Domestic Violence Intervention/Prevention
US Virgin Islands
- Development of a Website

- Research project on HIV/AIDS, mental health, et al.
Museum to archive women’s movement in the US Virgin Islands

- Work on committee to stem outflow of retirement fund for pensioners
St.Lucia
- Research on impact of trade policies

- Lectures and workshops

- Getting members to understand role

- National consultation on trade liberalisation

- Communication training (e.g. preparation of press release)

- Women and the law
St. Vincent and The Grenadines
- Research on: The impact of the loss of the banana market on lives;

- HIV/AIDS especially the risk to children; Teenage pregnancy

- The Domestic Violence Intervention/Prevention project was successful.

- Commemoration of International Women’s Day and International Day Against Violence Against Women

- Provided technical assistance ot farmers to augment their efforts
Suriname
- Domestic Violence Intervention/Prevention Project is on agenda of the relevant Ministry
Improved relationship with media (CAFRA activities covered in daily newspapers

- Donation given to HIV/AIDS victims
Trinidad & Tobago
- Youth issues (challenges to them and leadership issues)

- Exchange programme with Canadian women (Internship)
Calendar competition

- Training of youth including for leadership

- Leadership monitoring for young women

- Collaborative project on gender and the Caribbean media

- UNAIDS-sponsored HIV/AIDS response programme
Cuba, Puerto Rico & The Dominican Republic
- These three National Committees were involved in Economic Literacy Training around Trade issues and the impact on women.

- Six persons from each country participated in a workshop in the Dominican Republic in December 2001 for Spanish speaking members only.
