Imperialism Revisit

By Michelle Golding

Monday 27 November 2000

"World Trade Organisation rules
hang like a noose over the islands of the Caribbean
leaving a feeling of panic in the air
a flurry of meetings
by heads of government, policy makers, women’s groups
and civil society
to formulate a strategic plan
just to survive
imperialism revisit.

Social Clause whips
are aimed at our backs
eroding the competitive edge of Caribbean exports
imperialist countries roaring like lions down our backs
imposing their ideals
linking labour standards to multi-lateral trade agreements
forcing our back against the wall
weak are we
with no fighting chance to fight against the policing
and their social undermining of our region.

We must strategize
to liberate ourselves from economic slavery
and denigration
let us all integrate
make us one
to stand up for our freedom
and be a power
to stand up to this WTO dilemma".
