CAFRA’S 20th Anniversary

2004

In April 2005, CAFRA will celebrate its 20th Anniversary, having been founded on April 1, 1985. At the Regional Committee Meeting held in November 2004, it was agreed to launch a year long series of activities, as follows:

1. Launch the Anniversary year in April 2005. A sticker should be produced showing all activities for the year – a unifying marker.

2. A cultural celebration in one of the Caribbean islands pulling on talent from the region, and/or a CAFRA Festival of Arts and Craft (regional). Cuba is committed to sending musicians and singers to perform at events.

Produce a video from the cultural celebration and offer for sale.

3. Organise activities which would be done at the same time in each country as an act of solidarity

  • Recognition of Caribbean women - An Honour Roll for women who have come out of CAFRA. Archival digital Media on DVD as a memorial to all the fallen members of CAFRA.
  • Organise a CAFRA Festival of Art and Craft (national)
  • Relaunch past publications significant to the women’s movement.
  • Launch Peggy Antrobus’ book on the global women’s movement and other books on the women’s movement from the French, Spanish and Dutch speaking Caribbean.
  • Discuss the history of CAFRA and implications for the region. Reflect on CAFRA’s vision and mission, method of operation and changing context.

4. Commission an expert to write a professional history of CAFRA. The expert would do both research and speak to the CAFRA History. The possibility of publishing the work through the UWI Press would be explored. Other possibilities would include getting work published in Cuba. The idea for the book would be launched on the 20th Anniversary. The book would be translated into four languages (Spanish, English, Dutch and French)
