Tribute to the Late Angela King

No ordinary Woman

By Nelcia Robinson

2007

The Caribbean Association for Feminist Research & Action (CAFRA) records its deep sense of loss at the passing of Angela King, dedicated fighter for women’s equality and a Commander of the Order of Distinction, Jamaica.

It was Kofi Annan, past Secretary General of the United Nations who warned that “Women’s equality must be a central component of any attempt to solve the world’s social, economic and political problems.”

Certainly this was taken seriously as Angela King was appointed to the post of United Nations Assistant Secretary General, and Special Adviser on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women.

This was no ordinary woman, as she negotiated peace talks in racially divided South Africa, investigated the situation of women in Afghanistan under the Taliban, and advocated for the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, in the year 2000.

This skilled diplomat was a voice for women in the region and women of the world, strategically placed as she was “inside,” yet connected to the communities through the women from regional, national and community-based organizations present at the various United Nations meetings.

There was a fire inside this warrior woman, fuelling the energy to fight for women’s rights, contributing vastly to the measure of liberty in which women now walk.

Angela King, warrior woman has faced challenges and paved the way for the advancement of women.

It is for us now to stand tall on our mothers’ shoulders – on the shoulders of Angela King, remembering that it is our feet that are on the ground to carry forward the legacy.
