CAFRA

2003 PROGRAMME

Wednesday 25 December 2002

As we go forward into 2003, I borrow from the writings of several sisters through our “women notes” list serve. The word is light – making sure we keep the light on for ourselves and others. There is darkness as war clouds threaten and burst in various parts of the world, and corporate driven globalisation continues to threaten livelihoods of the poor – But let there be light.

GENDER AND TRADE

CAFRA will continue its advocacy, research and economic literacy training to build capacity to deal with the negative impacts of trade liberalisation on women and the threats to the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in the twelve critical areas of concern. OXFAM Canada will contribute to this aspect of CAFRA’s work.

CAFRA will implement its 2003 projects within these 12 critical areas of the Beijing Platform for Action and work towards changing these conditions.

  1. Persistent and increasing burden of poverty on women
  2. Inequalities and inadequacies in and unequal access to education and training
  3. Inequalities and inadequacies in and unequal access to health care and related services
  4. Violence against women
  5. Effects of armed or other kinds of conflict on women, including those living under foreign occupation
  6. Inequality in economic structures and policies all forms of productive activities access to resources
  7. Inequality between men and women in power sharing and decision-making at all levels
  8. Insufficient mechanisms to promote the advancement of women
  9. Lack of respect for, inadequate promotion and protection of women’s human rights
  10. Stereotyping of women and inequality in women’s access to and participation in all communication systems, especially in the media
  11. Gender inequalities in managing the natural resources and in safeguarding the environment
  12. Persistent discrimination against and violation of the right of the girl child

The CIDA Gender Equity Fund has approved a grant to CAFRA to produce gender indicators. These will be used as guides for policy makers as they design and implement their macroeconomic policies. Women and NGOs can also use these indicators as monitoring and lobbying tools.

Together with the Caribbean Policy Development Centre, the Caribbean Reference Group on Trade, and the Caribbean Gender and Trade Network, CAFRA will develop and implement activities around the WTO, FTAA and Cotonou Agreements, and the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).
